Bring Back Investor Visa!

Bring back the investor visa!

The UK’s decision to scrap its investor visa continues to ripple through the global mobility and investment landscape.

What’s striking is how little has changed since I wrote about this in WealthBriefing five years ago. At the time, I argued that removing the investor visa risked sending the wrong signal to international capital—and that reform, rather than abolition, would have been the more effective.

Fast forward to today, and that gap still exists.

While the move addressed legitimate concerns around transparency and the source of wealth, it also removed a clear, structured pathway for high-net-worth individuals to invest in the UK economy. In a world where capital is increasingly mobile, that absence is being noticed.

Other jurisdictions have not stood still. Many have refined—not removed—their investor routes, pairing robust due diligence with attractive frameworks for inward investment. The result? Capital, talent, and influence are being redirected elsewhere.

The UK still offers strong fundamentals—rule of law, deep capital markets, world-class education, and a global financial centre. But without a dedicated investor pathway, it risks missing out on a segment of globally mobile individuals who contribute not just capital, but networks, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic value.

The real question isn’t whether investor visas should exist—it’s how they should be designed. The opportunity now is to rethink the model: tighter controls, greater transparency, and clearer alignment with national economic priorities.

Five years on, the case for a well-structured investor route remains as strong as ever.
