As most of us know, the UK is transitioning towards Digital Immigration. Since 31 October 2024, the Home Office has stopped issuing BRP cards, the primary source of evidence for proving immigration status in the country.
The government has announced that the validity of existing BRP cards has expired on 31 December 2024.
However, due to some complications and technical issues, the registration date for the eVisa has been extended to 31 March 2025. Interestingly, expired BRP cards may still be used until then.
While most people know how to open an account and register for an eVisa, the real challenge lies with those individuals who possess a sticker or vignette only in their passports as evidence of limited or indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
Many people are unaware they must complete and submit a ‘No Time Limit’ (NTL) application form under certain circumstances. These circumstances include:
1. Transitioning to an eVisa
2. Lost or damaged documents
3. Expired passport
4. Change in personal details
5. Replacement of legacy documents
(Please note that vignettes and stamps in passports are considered ‘legacy documents.’) Individuals with old-style stamps or endorsements in their passports must update their documentation to a more secure and modern form, such as an eVisa.
Therefore, the No Time Limit (NTL) application is essential for all the conditions, including registering for the eVisa.
The main concern is for people who can prove their ILR status only through the stamps (vignettes) on their passports.
To obtain an eVisa, they must submit a No Time Limit (NTL) application.
The Home Office will verify the applicant’s ILR status, identity, and continuous residence in the UK through this application. It will also be checked to ensure that the ILR status has not lapsed due to prolonged absences from the UK.
Consequently, individuals in this category should seek legal advice if they do not use or intend to use their ILR status for settlement purposes in the UK.
Many people remain confused about the purpose and benefits of eVisa and Digital Immigration.
I think it is easy to view eVisa details online to confirm the type of permission, expiration date, and conditions for staying in the UK. A share code can be generated to provide evidence of immigration status to employers, landlords, or others who require confirmation of one’s immigration status.
